In the last 10 years, two technologies have emerged in the telecommunications market: Network Function Virtualization Technology (NFV) and Software Defined Network Technology (SDN). These technologies offer important benefits for network operators, among which we can identify:
- Reduce CAPEX (Capital Expenditures): Substituting specific hardware-based network nodes for general-purpose hardware reduces infrastructure costs.
- Reduce OPEX (Operating Expense): NFV and SDN based networks are programmable, making network configuration and management easier. In addition, this allows for a reduction in management time by administrators, reducing the probability of human error.
- Agility and flexibility: NFV and SDN allow the deployment of applications, services and infrastructures quickly to achieve the objectives proposed by companies in the shortest possible time.
- Innovation: It allows companies to create new types of applications and business models, which benefits them and increases the value of their networks.
The objective of this Diploma de Experto is the training of professionals capable of applying technologies related to NFV and SDN to the design and operation of telecommunications networks

Number of places available: 40
The program may be available as long as there is a minimum number of students to guarantee its viability.
Access RequirementsStudents are required to be in possession of a prior university degree, preferably:
- Computer Engineering
- Telecommunications engineering
- Degree in Telecommunications
- Degree in Computer Science
Graduates of other degrees could also access the Master studies, in which case they must demonstrate basic knowledge in Telematics (Communication Networks) and Informatics (Fundamentals of Programming and operating systems). This knowledge may be credited through distance courses (MOOCs) suggested by the Academic Commitee of the Master.
Previous professional experience is not a prerequisite, although it will be valued positively.
Admission Criteria
Admission will be decided by the Academic Committees of the Diploma de Experto. If deemed necessary, the applicant may be called for a personal interview. The selection of candidates will be based on the following criteria:
- Previous academic training of the applicant
- Academic record
- Curriculum vitae
- A brief statement of purpose. Motivation letter
- Commitment to dedication to the program.
- Photocopy of ID / Passport / NIE or Identity Card
- Photocopy of the University Degree or of the receipt of having paid the rates of expedition of the same.

- CAREER OPORTUNITIES
The Diploma de Experto will provide the student knowledge in areas related to NFV and SDN, which is why professional opportunities include:
- Network operation: operation and management of software-based networks, which is essentially different (and simpler) from the operation and management of traditional networks, which requires engineers trained in these technologies.
- Design and implementation of network elements. The design and implementation of these functions in software will be the new products that will be acquired by network operators. Equipment vendors will then need trained engineers to design, implement, maintain, and market this new range of products.
- Research: the research centers of the operators and of the vendors whose equipment and services are dedicating many resources in the lines of research related to these technologies, so that researchers trained in them will be attractive to these centers.
