MAI Alumni Program

It is a program aimed at former students of the Master in International Advocacy.

This project aims to foster an ongoing relationship between MAI and all its students, teachers and alumni through activities for their professional development. We intend that, once our students finish the Master, they will keep in touch with colleagues and teachers with whom they shared experiences and learning during their time at MAI.

The benefits of being part of MAI's Alumni database include, among others:

  • Invitations to MAI classes and the opportunity to catch up with teachers and former classmates
  • Share professional experiences with the students of the Master
  • Invitations to seminars given or organized by the MAI
  • Collaborate in MAI activities

  • MAI TEAM WINS THIRD PRIZE FOR THE BEST REFEREE AWARD AT THE 4TH SPORTS ARBITRATION MOOT
    In its first participation in the Sports Arbitration Moot, the team representing the Master in International Advocacy of the Universidad Carlos III now adds to the successes achieved during the oral phase the third prize for the best arbitration award.
    The team, led by Alfonso Gómez Rodríguez (lawyer at Uría Menéndez) and Víctor Motrel Martínez (lawyer), is composed of five students of the Master in International Law at Universidad Carlos III: Diego Delgado Rueda, Carolina Ibars Mayol, Pedro Miguel Mata Chacín, Carlos Müller Muiños and Lucía Salvo Lacorte.

  • CAREER TALK & CHRISTMAS COCKTAIL: DECEMBER 18
    If you are a student or alumni of the Master in International Advocacy of Universidad Carlos III or of one of the moot court teams of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, you are invited to the next Career Talk and Christmas cocktail organised by the MAI.
    The event will take place on December 18 at the Puerta de Toledo campus of the University. From 18:30 to 19:30, we will listen to the protagonists, Antonio Alexandre Marin Marin (litigation lawyer at Uría Menéndez, coach of the Carlos III University Vis Moot Team and MAI alumni) and Alvaro Jose Gutierrez Calero (Legal Consultant at Del Canto Chambers, London), who will talk about their experience in Spanish and English jurisdiction, respectively, and what is expected of a lawyer in their first years of practice. Both will be moderated by Juan Manuel Ramírez Cirera (FPU Predoctoral Fellow at UC3M).
    Afterwards, from 19:30 to 21:00, we will enjoy an informal cocktail to continue the conversation with the speakers and celebrate the approaching Christmas.

  • ANTI-SUIT INJUNCTIONS EN DERECHO MARÍTIMO: UN CAMBIO DE PARADIGMA EN EUROPA TRAS EL BREXIT
    On December 4, a conference organised by the Spanish Maritime Law Association - Asociación Española de Derecho Marítimo (Young AEDM) and the Master in International Advocacy of the Universidad Carlos III, will address a subject that generates particular controversy in the field of Maritime Law: the "anti-suit injunctions".
    Prestigious lawyers such as Jaime Albors, Oliver Caplin KC, Thomas Corby and Jokin Beltrán de Lubiano will take part. The conference will be presented by Prof. Juan Pablo Rodriguez Delgado and Diego de San Simón.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

MAI students in the 2020/2021 academic year participate in the following international competitions:

2023-2024 ACADEMIC YEAR

  • The team representing uc3m in the 31st Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot ("Vis Moot") has obtained the 38th best overall score in the general rounds (in which 364 teams participated), making our University the only Spanish team to advance to the finals.
    In the elimination rounds, the team made up of four MAI students (María Er-Rahali, Raquel Hazeu, Andrea Santamaría and Mireia Solés) placed among the top 32 in the competition of 364 teams from around the world.
    In addition, the team received an honorable mention in the Eric E. Bergsten Award (awarded to the best team in the oral phase).
  • In its first participation in the Sports Arbitration Moot, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid with a team composed of five students of the Master in International Advocacy, Diego Delgado Rueda, Carolina Ibars Mayol, Pedro Miguel Mata Chacín, Carlos Müller Muiños and Lucía Salvo Lacorte, has achieved a first great success, having qualified for the knockout rounds of the competition.
    The general rounds of the Sports Arbitration Moot, a moot court of worldwide prestige in sports arbitration, have brought together 66 universities from around the world. Of these, 16 have advanced to the final rounds, which will take place on May 23 and 24 in Madrid (specifically, at the headquarters of Uría Menéndez, Cuatrecasas and CIAM - CIAR).
    The group representing the University, which faced in general rounds the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) (Pakistan), Tbilisi State University (Georgia) and Universiteit van Amsterdam (Netherlands), has obtained its pass to the knockout rounds in a particularly outstanding way, occupying the second position overall.
    Alfonso Gómez Rodríguez (lawyer at Uría Menéndez and Associate Professor of Commercial Law at the University) and Víctor Motrel Martínez (lawyer at Uría Menéndez) are the coaches of the Uc3m/MAI team in this competition.

  • The team representing Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in the 31st Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot ("Vis Moot") is proclaimed, against 43 other teams from around the world, champion of the Vis Pre-Moot organized by the Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce of Paris.
    Between March 14 and 16, our representatives participated in several hearings held at the global headquarters of the Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce of Paris, probably the most prestigious arbitration institution in the world. Specifically, they faced the Université Paris Cité (France) and the University of Zagreb (Croatia) in the general rounds, the University of Hamburg (Germany) in the quarterfinals, the University of New South Wales (New Zealand) in the semifinals, and the Honourable Society of Gray's Inn (United Kingdom) in the final. The relevance of the Pre-Moot organized by the Chamber, which was attended by 44 universities from all over the world, was particularly noteworthy this year, given the application of its Arbitration Rules to the case of this edition of the Vis Moot.
    The team includes four students from the Master's Degree in International Advocacy at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid: María Er-Rahali, Raquel Hazeu, Andrea Santamaría and Mireia Solés. In addition, two undergraduate students are also part of the team: Martín Caballero (Double Degree in Law and Political Science) and Ruth Smith (Double Degree in Law and Business Administration). The group is led by Prof. Tatiana Arroyo (Deputy Director of the Master in International Law), Antonio Marín (Associate Professor of Commercial Law at the University and lawyer at Uría Menéndez) and Juan Manuel Ramírez (FPU Predoctoral Fellow at the University).

  • MAI students (María Er-Rahali, Raquel Hazeu, Mireia Solés and Andrea Santamaría) members of the Uc3m team at the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot ("Vis Moot") reached the Semifinals of the IX Madrid Vis Pre-Moot, organized by ACMEY on 28.2 to 1.3. Raquel Hazeu won the award of Second Best Speaker of the competition.

  • The UC3M team in which MAI student Bente Scheepvaart participates has won the national rounds of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, which were held at the Barcelona offices of Cuatrecasas between February 20 and 22. This victory qualifies UC3M as the only Spanish university that will represent Spain in the international rounds, which will be held in Washington, D.C., between March 30 and April 6.
     
  • On February 12, 2024, the 4th Deloitte Legal Award Ceremony was held for Ghizlane Laaouej, who received the award from José María Elías de Tejada, partner of Deloitte Legal.
    This award is associated with the "Business Transaction Lab" ("BTL") activity of the Master in International Advocacy of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. In the BTL, our students design, plan and execute a large transaction (corporate or financial), including the negotiation and drafting of the main documentation. In addition, the BTL involves making a presentation and undergoing questioning by prestigious practicing lawyers in connection with the analysis of the transaction.

  • On January 29, MAI students enjoyed a visit to the headquarters of the CIAM (Centro Internacional de Arbitraje de Madrid), located in the Palacio de Santoña.
    During this day, the students learned first-hand about the Center's organization chart, functions, working groups and areas of specialization. Likewise, lawyers from this institution explained to the students the main milestones of a commercial arbitration proceeding administered by CIAM. To conclude, the students discovered the very interesting history of the Palace.
    We are very grateful to CIAM for organizing this activity, and especially to the speakers during the day (Marta Lalaguna Holzwarth, Sebastián Mejía García, María Arias Navarro and María Paula Jijón).

2022-2023 ACADEMIC YEAR

  • The team of MAI students (Estefanía Álvarez, Margarita Sarralde and Miguel Ares) received the "best client award" at the Mediate Wise Competition, held from July 23 to 30 in Lisbon.
     
  • The Madrid International Arbitration Center (CIAM) in line with the objective of contributing to promote and disseminate the texts of the Uniform Law of International Trade, in particular the 1980 Vienna Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and the Unidroit Principles on International Commercial Contracts, has proceeded to review the awards issued by the Madrid Court of Arbitration (between 2015 and the present) and by CIAM since its creation, in which the applicable law is the Vienna Convention or one of the aforementioned texts is used as part of the reasoning of the arbitral tribunal.
    The analysis carried out by Mauricio Rapso, CIAM intern and student of the Master in International Advocacy (MAI) at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, under the direction of CIAM's General Secretary, Marta Lalaguna and supervision of Professor Pilar Perales Viscasillas, Co-Director of the MAI, has resulted in the publication of the summaries in Spanish and English of the cases with identification of the sector or goods, countries of the parties and provisions cited.   • The Master's Degree in International Advocacy of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid is the most complete in Spain in its field of specialization, according to the guide of masters of law prepared by the portal Todojuristas.com.
    Last Friday, June 23, Todojuristas.com published its Masters in Law Guide, which aims to guide students who are considering postgraduate studies in the legal field.
    According to the aforementioned portal, the Master's Degree in International Advocacy at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid is the best of those offered in our country in this field. In addition, in the framework of this recognition, Prof. Pilar Perales Viscasillas, director of the program, has offered an interview, which can be read on pages 19 to 21 of the guide.
     
  • MOOT MADRID │ The UC3M Master in International Advocacy (MAI) team composed of Elena Arguis García, Mauricio Stefano Rapso Henríquez, Natalia Yaybek Panario, Consuelo Navarro, Mª Eugenia Gómez García and Maria Milagrosa have been semifinalists and have obtained several awards in the 15th edition of Moot Madrid:

  • On March 11, MAI students (Paula Rodríguez, Miguel Ares and Margarita Sarralade) participating in the INADR Moot, held in Bologna (Italy), were recognized as the best "Mediation Spirit" team.

  • On March 2, the uc3m team in the Jessup Moot Court Competition won the national phase, as well as the prize for the best lawsuit brief and the prize for the best speaker. Lucía León Monedero, MAI student, participates in the team.
     
  • On March 1, 2023, the Third Edition Deloitte Legal Award Ceremony was held for Lucía Díaz de Berricano Bayón. She received the award from Nicolás de Gaviria, managing partner of Deloitte Legal, and José María Elías de Tejada, partner of the same firm.

  • Career Talks in the Master in International Advocacy
    On November 16, 2022 we will have a Career Talk by Enrique Chamorro, partner of DLA Piper, who will have the opportunity to tell us about his career and the type of business operations he has been in charge of throughout his professional life.

  • The Directors of Moot Madrid will participate in the Conference on Litigación estratégica y cambio climático organized by La Cátedra de Estudios Jurídicos Iberoamericanos on October 18 between 19:00 and 20:30 (CEST).
    The event will be coordinated by Prof. Pilar Perales Viscasillas, co-director of the MAI, and will include among its speakers Prof. David Ramos Muñoz, also co-director of the Master. Nora Esther Cabrera Velasco (Prof. at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey) and Javier Solana (Prof. at the University of Glasgow) will also participate.

  • On October 11 at 17h will take place in the Salon de Grados of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Campus Puerta de Toledo the presentation of Conversatorio. Alegatos orales y técnicas de interrogatorio: los aportes de la psicología, la neurociencia y las artes escénicas, by the firm Bullard, Falla, Ezcurra +, ending with a toast-Networking.
  • Universidad Carlos III de Madrid celebrates 25 years participating in Vis Moot
    Universidad Carlos III de Madrid celebrates 25 years participating in the prestigious Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, in which it has achieved excellent results, being the first Spanish-speaking team to win the oral phase of the competition in 2008.
    The directors of the Master of International Advocacy (MAI), Pilar Perales Viscasillas, David Ramos and currently Tatiana Arroyo, have trained UC3M teams in this competition for the past 25 years, training generations of lawyers in the world of arbitration and international commercial law.
    During all this time, numerous lawyers and law firms have supported this initiative and we thank them for their collaboration, as well as all the trainers and especially all the participants of the different editions of this Moot.

  • Second Edition Deloitte Legal Award Ceremony
    The Deloitte Legal Award is associated with the "Business Transaction Lab" (BTL) activity of the Master in International Advocacy.
    The winner of the second edition was Celia García Paredes. The award was presented by José María Elias de Tejada, partner of Deloitte Legal, and Prudencio López Martínez-Acacio, senior associate and member of the Jury that decided the award among the four finalists.

2021-2022 ACADEMIC YEAR

  • A team formed by students of the MAI and the Law Degree of Universidad Carlos III de Madrid has participated with notable success in the 8th edition of the Moot de Libre Competencia organized by Bullard Falla Ezcurra + and the Faculty of Law of the Universidad del Pacífico (PE), qualifying for the quarterfinals and winning the prize for the best memorial of the complained party and a third prize in the category of best memorial of the complaining party.
    The competition was held virtually between August 3 and 6 and pitted 17 teams from Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Spain and Peru against each other.
    Our representatives, trained by Javier Pérez Fernández (Lawyer at Ramón y Cajal Abogados and Associate Professor of Commercial Law at UC3M), were as follows: Fantastic job! Congratulations!
     
  • The winner of the third edition of the Deloitte Legal Award held last June was Lucía Díaz de Berricano Bayón.
     
  • The final of the third edition of the Deloitte Legal Award will be held on June 28th. This award, organized by Deloitte Spain and the Master in International Advocacy of Universidad Carlos III, selects the best students for a series of presentations and questions, which will also involve an additional step to analyze a transactional problem, propose solutions and discuss them with the best lawyers.It is associated with the "Business Transaction Lab" (BTL) activity of the MAI. The jury of this edition will be composed of:

  • The Master in International Advocacy participates in the International Investment Arbitration Course, GoArb 2022, in which Moot Madrid also collaborates and which will take place from July 4-8, 2022. Two attendance scholarships for MAI students, who will also benefit from a discount on the registration fee.

  • The MAI team of Universidad Carlos III participated in the XIV edition of the Moot Madrid, whose hearings were held from April 18 to 22.
    The Team was awarded with:
    • FIRST Award for the Best Statement of Defense,
    • HONORABLE MENTION for the Best Plaintiff's Brief Award,
    • HONORABLE MENTION to the "longest-suffering" team: the team that had to compete the most times in general rounds.
       
  • January 13 to January 26, 2022 │ MAI celebrated the course Advanced Course on Transnational aspects of Anti-Briberyand Corruption Laws.
    The course was given by Tom Wethered, professor of the Master in International Law, formerly a lawyer at Uría Menéndez, and General Counsel at KPMG (currently an independent lawyer and consultant), one of the leading experts in the field on a practical level, and on a global scale.
     
  • January 11, 2022 │ Seminar Corporate Governance and Sustainability
    The MAI in collaboration with the Deloitte Legal Chair in Business Law at the University Carlos III of Madrid, has organized for its students and Alumni an online seminar on Corporate Governance and Sustainability.
    The seminar included two invited presentations:
    • “Company Law and Sustainability: Corporate Governance Fit for Future”
      Professor Beate Sjåfjell, from the University of Oslo, one of Europe's foremost experts in the field.
    • “Introduction to Green Finance”
      Professor Elia Cerrato García, PhD student at the Universities Carlos III of Madrid and the University of Bologna

    Pilar Perales was interviewed for the special "women and leadership" of the media Líder Legal, where the director of MAI spoke about the current scenario and the main challenges posed by arbitration in the coming years.   • On November 12, 2021, Deloitte Legal Chair of Business Law at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid organized a new conference on virtual jurisdiction and arbitration.
    The Virtual Jurisdiction and Arbitration conference was attended by Ms. Mélanie Riofrío Piché, Secretary General of the International Court of Arbitration of Madrid, Mr. Blas Piñar Guzmán, §yndēresis legal and Mr. Alvaro Alarcon Davalos, Senior Associate Deloitte Legal.
    The moderators were Ms. Pilar Perales Viscasillas, Professor of Commercial Law at UC3M, co-director of the Deloitte Legal Chair in Business Law and director of MAI and Mr. Eduardo Villellas, Partner of Deloitte L.
     
  • On November 5, the Premio al mejor Laudo del Moot Madrid was published. Among the winners was Javier García Urbano, student of Master of Access and MAI (Promotion 20/21).
     
  • On October 26, 2021, Deloitte Legal Chair of Business Law at the Carlos III University of Madrid organizes a session on the Reglas INCOTERMS 2020.
    The Deloitte Legal Chair in Business Law's conferences were attended by a group of experts who will analyze the form and substance of these Rules after their latest revision in 2020, determining their purpose and correct application, with special emphasis on their use in the commodities sector.
    Pilar Perales Viscasillas, Director of MOOT Madrid and MAI, Professor of Commercial Law at Carlos III University and co-director of the Deloitte Legal Chair in Business Law participated as a speaker.
     
  • October 19 was held a new edition of Career Talks and we were delighted to be accompanied by great experts:  
    • Maria Vicen-Milburn, former General Counsel of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris (2009-2014), and the former Director of the General Legal Division of the United Nations (UN) Office of Legal Affairs in New York (2004-2009)
    • Alejandro Garro, Professor at Columbia University School of Law
    • Sandra González, Head of the FERRERE’s Litigation and Arbitration team
    • Juan Manuel Poggio-Aguerre, expert lawyer in commercial and investment arbitration cases

2020-2021 ACADEMIC YEAR

  • The Master Team of Universidad Carlos III among the top 4 of the XIII edition of Moot Madrid, whose hearings were held from April 12 to 16! In the final hearings, the Team ranked among the semifinalists, positioning itself as one of the four best teams of the competition.
    In addition, the Team has obtained:

    • has won the national round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition for the sixth consecutive year
    • placed in the "top 32" after winning 7 out of 8 rounds in the international qualification phase (out of the 570 who participated in the international rounds)
    • received the "Spirit of the Jessup" award.

  • Climate Strategic Initiative
    Carlos III University of Madrid launches in December 2020 the Climate Strategic Initiative, an interdisciplinary project that brings together the efforts of researchers from different areas of knowledge at Carlos III University of Madrid, with the aim of exploring imaginative solutions to climate change, the greatest human challenge of the 21st century.
    The fight against climate change is a global effort, which requires the involvement of the best global lawyers.
    The Master of International Advocacy maintains its commitment to this challenge, training the best jurists, and its two co-directors are members of the Climate Strategic Initiative.

  • First Edition Deloitte Legal Award Ceremony
    The Deloitte Legal Award is associated with the "Business Transaction Lab" (BTL) activity of the Master in International Advocacy.
    In its first edition the winner was María Domingo Roldán. José María Elias de Tejada, partner of Deloitte Legal and member of the Jury that decided the award among the three finalists, presented the award.

2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR

  • MAI students Paloma Aurioles Gálvez del Postigo and Ana Marín Fernández de la Vega were part of the uc3m team at the Moot Libre Competencia (Peru). The 2020 edition took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, so its oral phase was held in online format. Universidad Carlos III de Madrid presented a team in that competition for the first time, and being, moreover, the first Spanish and European team to present in the history of the competition to date. The UC3M team managed to qualify for the round of the top 8 teams (quarterfinals). The total number of participating teams was 31.
     
  • MAI students Sara Aquilue and Ana Isabel Ganado were part of the uc3m team at the Willem Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Before the outbreak of the health crisis in Europe, the team representing UC3M in the Willem C. Vis Moot participated in person in the Madrid Vis Pre-Moot, held in the offices of Cuatrecasas, Hogan Lovells, Linklaters and Allen & Overy on February 27 and 28, where they competed against the universities of Lisbon, EFB-Paris Bar School, Jagiellonian and Aix-Marseille. It also participated in person in the LSE-LCIA Vis Pre-Moot 2020, held in London at the London School of Economics on March 7 and 8. The team competed against the Universities of Basel, Francisco Marroquín, Aalborg, Jagiellonian, Bonn and University College London. After the outbreak of the COVID 19 crisis, the uc3m team decided to participate in the oral phase in the online format proposed by the organization of the Vis Moot, being a great challenge to adapt to the new support and competing online against the universities of New Vision, San Diego, Brasilia and Frankfurt am Main.

  • The UC3M presents the Deloitte Legal Chair of Business Law with the aim of promoting training and study in relation to the different legislations that govern business activity in all its areas, including commercial, transaction, regulatory, corporate governance or arbitration matters.
    This initiative also seeks to develop the interest of law students of the University in this branch. For this reason, it will promote the development of training programmes, particularly those related to the Master in International Law, the Moot Madrid and the activities of the commercial law area of the Department of Private Law of the UC3M. Within the framework of the Chair, the Deloitte Prize has been created for students of the transactional path of the Master in International Law.
    This Chair, co-directed by Pilar Perales Viscasillas, professor in the Department of Private Law at UC3M, and Sharon Izaguirre Gómez, partner in charge of the Corporate and Legal M&A area at Deloitte Legal, has representatives from the legal area of different entities in its Academic Council, such as: Banco Santander; the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of Madrid; the Madrid College of Lawyers; Iberdrola; Mapfre and Telefónica.

  • Moot Madrid: Paula Arroyo Montes, Beatrice Braga, María Cano Esteban and Sofía Manzanares Bonilla. The UC3M team at Moot Madrid has obtained the following results:

    The UC3M team also managed to qualify for the quarter-final round, and therefore also received Honorable Mention.
  • Willem Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot: Laiene Etxebarria Abiña and Alicia Larrazabal Erminy.
    The team representing UC3M surpassed the general rounds of Willem C. Vis Moot, where it competed with the universities of Munich, The Hague, FAAP Sao Paulo and American University of Washington. The team reached 62nd place out of 372 teams, falling in the elimination rounds against Brooklyn University.
  • FIA Moot: Alejandra Ruiz de Apodaca Marcos. The UC3M team reached 25th place in the 12th Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court (FIA).
  • Moot Internacional de Mediación y Negociación: Beatriz Arroyo Argüelles and Juan Tejada Londoño. The team passed the preliminary rounds and the students received the Recognition for the Team with the Best Interventions with the Mediator.
  • International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot: Celia López Carmona and Zuriñe Sanz Chalzquer.
    The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid team ends its participation in the International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot after qualifying for the semi-finals. The oral phase of the 2019 edition took place at the headquarters of Erasmus University (Rotterdam) with the participation of 35 teams from five continents (the uc3m team was the only Spanish representative along with 6 other Europeans).

    The UC3M team also participated in the Barcelona Vis Pre-moot, held on 22 March 2019 at the offices of Gómez-Acebo & Pombo, competing against the universities of Leiden, Montpellier, ESADE and Krakow. The team won the honorary prize for "Best Claimant" and Celia Cañete, speaker in the substantive part, obtained the honorary mention for "Best Oralist".

  • Within the Series of Seminars on Career Talks of the Master in International Advocacy, we inaugurated the guest cycle with Professor Alejandro Garro of Columbia University and the international referee Antonio Hierro, who will tell us about their extensive experience in the field of international arbitration. Nazareth Romero will act as moderator.
