Ten UC3M students receive an excellence scholarship from the “la Caixa” Foundation to carry out postgraduate studies abroad

Ten students from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) have received scholarships in the 42nd edition of the “La Caixa” Foundation’s abroad postgraduate scholarships, an initiative that selects 100 students each year to carry out Master’s and PhD studies at the best universities in the world due to their academic excellence. This year, UC3M is the second university to receive the highest number of scholarships, only behind Pompeu Fabra.

The award-winning UC3M students are studying degrees in Political Science (1), Audiovisual Communication (1), Philosophy, Politics and Economics (1), History and Politics (1), Biomedical Engineering (5) and Sociology (1). 

The award ceremony for this year's “la Caixa” Foundation scholarships took place on the 5th of June and was chaired by King Felipe VI. The event, held at CaixaForum Madrid, was also attended by the Rector of the University, Ángel Arias, the Minister for Equality, Ana Redondo, and the President of the “la Caixa” Foundation, Isidro Fainé. 

978 applications were submitted for this year's ‘la Caixa’ scholarships, of which 100 obtained scholarships. This year's scholarship holders come from 27 Spanish provinces (mainly Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Asturias and Castellón), five Portuguese districts and two other countries. The most represented disciplines are engineering and technology, mathematics, molecular biology and biochemistry, medical and health sciences and physics. 

Regarding the origin of the study scholarships, they have been divided between two continents: 65 to study in Europe and 33 to study in North America. The universities that will receive the most scholarships are the University of Cambridge (8), the University of Oxford (6), the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (5), the ETH Zurich (5), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (4), Harvard University (4), New York University (4) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (4). 

These scholarships to carry out Master's, PhD or predoctoral research studies have a maximum duration of 24 months. The grant programme covers the full cost of tuition fees and a monthly stipend in the host country’s currency, as well as travel expenses and an orientation course.

People awarded scholarships by ‘La Caixa’ are part of the ‘La Caixa’ Scholarship Holders Network . This group has become an academic and professional reference, both nationally and internationally.
