Professor Matilde Pilar Sánchez Fernández
Engineer Doctor of Telecommunications from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (2001), she has been a Professor in the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at Carlos III University in Madrid since March 2022. She has previous experience in the industrial sector as an engineer at Telefónica. She has conducted research stays at the University of Kansas, USA (1998), Bell Laboratories, USA (2003–2006 and 2015), CTTC, Spain (2007), Princeton University, USA (2011), Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Chile (2022) and Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Italy (2024).
Her lines of research cover communications, signal and information processing, and the application of game theory and statistical learning to these problems. In these fields, she is the (co-)author of more than 80 contributions in international journals and conferences and six patents. She has participated in 40 research projects, coordinating 6 of them, and in 25 technology transfer contracts. She has received 4 positive evaluations of her research activity and 1 positive evaluation of her transfer activity. She received third prize in the 2014 Bell Labs Prize, an international innovation competition that recognises technological solutions with transformative potential.
In university management, she has held positions as Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and European University, Vice-Rector for International Relations and Cooperation, Deputy Vice-Rector for International Relations, and academic responsibilities (Deputy Academic Director and Academic Secretary) in the Department of Signal Theory and Communications. She is currently a scientific collaborator at the State Research Agency.
