Professor Gonzalo Ricardo Ríos Muñoz

Assistant Professor in the Bioengineering Department and Deputy Director for the Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M). He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering from UC3M in 2012, followed by a Master’s in Multimedia and Communications (2015) and a Ph.D. in the same field (2018). After completing his doctoral studies, he joined the Cardiology Department at Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón (2019–2022) as a postdoctoral researcher, focusing on translational research projects aimed at understanding the initiation and maintenance mechanisms of atrial fibrillation.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ríos Muñoz has established a strong research line in cardiac electrophysiology, signal processing, and deep learning. He has participated in multiple national and European (H2020) projects and has served as Principal Investigator, co-PI, or coordinator in a total of 6 funded research initiatives, accumulating EUR 600,000 in research grants. His contributions include 13 JCR-indexed journal articles, several conference proceedings, and a patent derived from his doctoral work, focused on identifying the “drivers” responsible for sustaining atrial fibrillation. This technology is currently being applied in the ARTIST clinical trial (NCT04662489), which seeks to validate a novel therapeutic approach in 244 patients. In addition, he has forged collaborations with private entities such as Biosense Webster (Johnson & Johnson) and Medtronic Inc., and leads a national multicenter study on the effectiveness of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators and the application of artificial intelligence models for remote patient monitoring.

Since 2019, he has combined his research activities with university teaching, delivering over 900 hours of instruction in both English and Spanish at undergraduate and graduate levels, achieving an average student evaluation of 4.32 out of 5. He has supervised more than 20 Bachelor’s theses, 5 Master’s theses, and is currently overseeing 4 Ph.D. dissertations. He also serves on the IT Council at UC3M, is a member of the National Plan Evaluation Committee, and acts as a reviewer for international conferences and high-impact journals. His work has been recognized with several honors, including ANECA accreditations as “Profesor Contratado Doctor” (2022) and “Profesor Ayudante Doctor” (2021), a Finalist Award in the “First Edition of the Best Invention Protected by Industrial Property Rights” (OEPM, 2022), and an Nvidia GPU Grant (2019), among others.
