Juan Carlos Cabanelas Valcarcel
Professor Juan Carlos Cabanelas Valcarcel
J. Carlos Cabanelas has a degree in Chemical Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. He received his doctorate from the Carlos III University of Madrid in January 2001. He has been a tenured professor at this university since 2008, in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering, of which he has been subdirector from 2011 to the present.
He has developed most of his research activity in polymeric materials and polymeric matrix composite materials, with special attention to the development of hybrid organo-inorganic materials, polymer blends and the study of the structure and properties of the interface in composite materials. Since 2006 he has focused his research on the study of nanocomposites, mainly on the problem of nano-reinforcement dispersion, development of surface coatings and, ultimately, the modeling and control of the interface. He has co-directed 5 doctoral theses (1 more in progress). Recently, he extended his research focus to the preparation of functional materials with self-healing characteristics and improved properties.
He has participated in more than 16 competitive research projects, being IP of two of them. He has published 25 articles indexed in JCR (70% in the first quartile), in addition to 3 book chapters and other contributions, with more than 600 citations (average of 25 citations/article), with an H index of 13, and with numerous international collaborations.
Regarding the teaching side, he teaches undergraduate and postgraduate classes in the master's degree in Industrial Engineering and in the master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering, in which he has taught classes on polymers and blends for more than 10 years. In addition to the theses, he has tutored numerous undergraduate and master's projects (about 1-2 per year).
