JESSICA César Cuello Y Jurado

On Wednesday, September 11th, Jessica César Cuello, member of the Group of Optoelectronics and Laser Technology (GOTL), defended her Ph.D. thesis entitled "Radiofrequency Photonic Integrated Devices for Space Applications". The research carried out in this thesis focuses on the analysis, design and characterization of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) for space applications. In particular, it focuses on the development of a novel structure of a photonic radiometer for weather forecasting and the study of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. This radiometer, based on the upconversion process, will be part of a 12U CubeSat platform where a proof-of-concept of the upconversion process will be performed in orbit. One of the main advantages of the radiometer structure presented in this thesis is that it will be able to operate at room temperature without the need for cryogenic systems. Another advantage of the radiometer is the photonic integration of its modules, which reduces the size, weight and power consumption (SWaP) of the payload.

The jury was formed by Horacio Lamela (UC3M), Antonio Pérez (UPM) and Iñigo Ederra (UPNA). They awarded her a Suma Cumme Laude grade.
