Nicolas D. Georganas - University of Ottawa (CANADA)
Nicolas D. Georganas received his B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and earned his Ph D Summa cum Laude in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada.
He was a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he later was Chair until 1984. He was appointed Founding Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Associate Vice-President for Research, and held a Canada Research Chair in Information Technology. On sabbatical leaves he lectured at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, and the University of Vienna, Austria, as well as in various research centers such as the IBM Research Center, La Gaude, France, or Bell-Northern Research in Ottawa, Canada.
Dr. Georganas holds Honorary Doctorates from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and the University of Darmstadt, Germany. He was Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Trans. on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications (TOMCCAP) and Secretary of the Academy of Science, Royal Society of Canada.
His research work was recognized by prestigious awards such as the IEEE Canada Computer Medal, the Canadian Award in Telecommunications Research, the Pioneer of Computing in Canada Award and the Killam Prize, among others.
Professor Georganas passed away on 27 July, 2010.
