John Carroll - Pennsylvania State University (USA)
John Carroll studied Mathematics and Information Science at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, and holds and MA and PhD in Psychology from Columbia University.
Dr. Carroll is the Edward M. Frymoyer Professor of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University where he also co-directs the Laboratory for Computer-Supported Collaboration and Learning (CSCL).
Carroll has been a leader in the development of the field of Human-Computer Interaction. In 1984 he founded the User Interface Institute at the IBM Thomas J.Watson Research Center, the most influential corporate research laboratory during the latter 1980s. In the 1994, he joined Virginia Tech as Department Head of Computer Science in order to of establish an internationally renowned HCI focus in research and teaching. In 1995, Carroll led the effort to form the university’s Center for Human-Computer Interaction.
Dr. Carroll is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the ACM’s Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the same Association. Carroll is a Fellow of the IEEE, an Honorary Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and a recipient of the IEEE’s Alfred N. Goldsmith Award for Distinguished Contributions to Engineering Communication.
