Alessandro lomi - University of Lugano (SWITZERLAND)

Alessandro Lomi earned his PhD at Cornell University in Organization Theory, where he also received a Master of Science degree. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Bologna in Economics and Management. He directs the Center for Organizational Research (CORe) and teaches Organizational Theory and Behavior in the School of Economics, University of Lugano (USI) in Switzerland. Dr. Lomi is also Director of the PhD program in Communication Science, Scientific Director of the University of Bologna Summer School, Co-director of the Master in Human Resource Management and Vice-director of the Undergraduate Program in Applied Computer Science at the University of Bologna. He has been a visiting lecturer at Oxford University, the University of Melbourne, Budapest University, Santa Fe Institute and UC Berkeley, among others. He has published more than 70 articles on Economics and Socio-demographic Analysis and has participated in more than 100 conferences. Dr. Lomi is a National Research Adviser in Switzerland.

RESEARCH STAY AT UC3M: BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT

PROJECT:

Two research projects that are central in the portfolio of his recent research activities. The first project concerns the effects of the categorical structure of organizational environments on the behavior of companies. The specific empirical setting of this research is patenting behavior in the global semiconductor industry. His co-authors and him are building a theory of how entry into technological patent classes is driven by a process of matching between characteristics of the entrants and characteristics of the patent classes. They are testing the theory using data made available by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The second project concerns the organization of a conference at Stanford University on models of organizational decision making. The conference celebrates the work of J.G. March, M.D. Cohen and J.P. Olsen, and will provide an opportunity to edit a volume that collects and organizes the contributions of prominent organization theorists interested in organizational decision-making and problem-solving processes.
