Eckart Schütrumpf

Eckart Schütrumpf - University of Colorado, Boulder (USA)

Eckart Schütrumpf graduated in Classical Studies and Philosophy from the Universities of Marburg and Munich. He holds a PhD (and habilitation) from the University of Marburg with a mention of excellence for his thesis Aristotelian theory of tragedy in its relation to Ethics. Since 1988 he has been a Professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He also held the position of Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town. In 2005 he received the Humboldt Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Dr. Schütrumpf has published 10 books on the ethics and politics of Aristotle as well as numerous articles in American and German journals on political, ethical, rhetorical and poetic issues in ancient thinkers. He is now working on the final part of his fourvolume commentary on Aristotle's Politics, and has co-edited volumes on the Peripatetics, Demetrius of Phalerum and Dicaearchus (forthcoming). He is a member of the American Philological Association, the Association of Ancient Historians and was a resident fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

RESEARCH STAY AT UC3M: INSTITUTE OF CLASSICAL STUDIES LUCIO ANNEO SÉNECA

PROJECT: Prof. Eckart Schütrumpf, from the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA, is completing two publications on the institution of ancient slavery and classical Greek philosophy as represented by Plato and Aristotle. Prof. Schütrumpf´s major project he is pursuing during his stay at UC3M is a new edition of fragments of Aristotle´s political and historical writings. Politics and history were of considerable interest for Aristotle, however, many of the works he wrote on these subjects are lost now. What is left are quotations in later authors which need to be collected and published in a critical edition. This new edition of the ancient texts with translation will add to our knowledge of a virtually ignored side of Aristotle´s philosophical thinking.
