Peter Meissner

Peter Meissner - Technische Universität Darmstadt (ALEMANIA)

Peter Meissner was born in Adelsdorf, Germany on November 1943. He received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in 1971 and the Dr. Ing. Degree 1976 - both in electrical engineering - from the Technical University, Berlin. Since 1971 he was with the Heinrich Hertz Institut für Nachrichtentechnik in Berlin, where he was engaged in the field of navigation systems and adaptive echo control.

From 1985 to 1994 he worked on the field of optical communications, where his main interests were theory of semiconductor lasers, coherent optical communications and WDM systems and networks. 1981 he stayed for 6 months as guest scientist at Musashino Electrical Communication Laboratory, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation,Tokyo, Japan and 1986 for 4 months as guest scientist at Bell Communication Research, Red Bank, New Jersey, USA.

Since 1995 he is a Professor for Optical Communications at the University of Technology, Darmstadt. His main research topics are tunable micromachined filters, receivers and lasers for WDM systems, high speed optical communications, PMD compensation techniques and optical THz generation.

Research stay at UC3M: DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Project: The idea of the project is to intensify the cooperation between Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Technische Universität Darmstadt on the fields of THz generation and detection by optical heterodyning and widely and continuously tunable VCSELs. Here the expertise of Madrid on THz imaging and the experience of Darmstadt on the development of photoconductive CW THz systems will complement each other ideally.

Due to their excellent properties the widely tunable VCSELs developed in the European SUBTUNE project under the project leadership of Darmstadt open new applications in many areas such as communications and spectroscopy. Here new perspectives on remote spectroscopy will be discussed for optical instrumentation.
