Roderick Melnik - Wilfrid Laurier University (CANADÁ)
Roderick Melnik has been Full Professor and Tier I CRC in Mathematical Modelling in the Faculty of Science at the Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada since 2004. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Melnik held full professorial positions at Louisiana Tech University in the USA and the University of Southern Denmark, where he was the Head of Mathematical Modelling and Engineering Mathematics. He received his M.Sc. degree in Applied Mathematics and Ph.D. degree in Computational Mathematics from Kiev State University in 1985 and 1989, respectively.
Starting his academic career in Europe, he continued it in Australia until in the late 1990s he took the position of senior scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Sydney, working in the Division of Mathematical and Information Sciences. Dr. Melnik has published extensively in a variety of fields with his major focus on mathematical modelling for challenging problems in science and technology.
His articles are in several Encyclopedic Books. He is currently on Editorial Boards of many international journals such as Applied Mathematical Modelling, Advances in Difference Equations, Nanomaterials, International Journal of Differential Equations, as well as of monograph series. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the new journal "Nanoscale Systems: Mathematical Modeling, Theory and Applications".
Dr Melnik has been on organizing, technical and program committees of numerous international conferences, congresses, symposia, and workshops, working in close collaboration with his colleagues from the United States, Australia, Europe, Canada, and other parts of the world. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society.
Research stay at UC3M: DEPARTMENT OF MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Project: To develop mathematical models for the description of low dimensional nanostructures (LDNs) and their arrays, systematically accounting for the influence of coupled effects and phenomena (such as electromechanical, thermal, and magnetic fields acting together) on the properties of these nanostructures; to develop efficient numerical methodologies for solving the resulting mathematical models, and to apply them in studying properties of nanostructures in physical (and in some cases biological) applications.
Stay Period: JAN 13 - JUL 13
Conferences
Lecturer: Profesor Dr. Roderick Melnik
