Thomas Åstebro is Professor of strategy and entrepreneurship at HEC Paris; Professor of entrepreneurship at KULeuven (20%); Academic Director, HEC Leadership Center; co-Director Entrepreneurship Track HEC MBA Program, and past member of the Steering committee Groupement de Recherche et d’Etudes en Gestion d’HEC (HEC Management Research Group) and the Steering and Curriculum committees, MBA Program at HEC. He is listed in Marquis Who's Who in the World, is among the top 2 percent most downloaded authors on www.ssrn, has made over 150 presentations, published over 30 academic journal articles, and has been mentioned in business media over 50 times (including The Economist, Business Week, The Times, and Wall Street Journal). Research stay at UC3M: DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Project: Academics produce patents that are sometimes commercialized. Commercialization can take several routes. One method is to transfer the patent to the employer and let the Technology Licensing Office (TLO) at the University expedite the commercialization process. Another method is for the Academic to him/her-self try to commercialize the invention in a start-up and without the help of the TLO. A third method is to engage industry and try to commercialize the invention by transferring the patent to an established business. Current empirical literature is inconclusive as to which choice is preferred, and what the outcomes are from making these different choices. We suggest to study these choices for academic inventors.
