GENERAL ISSUES - Mentor

Do I have to be a subject matter expert to be a mentor in the PDI Mentoring programme at UC3M?

Subject matter expertise helps, but to guide, you just need to bring your experience, to stimulate, to help enhance the talent and skills of your mentee.

What is the difference between training and mentoring?

What is the difference between training and mentoring?
Training is generally delivered according to a pre-determined curriculum, and the trainee takes on responsibility for completing the exercises in the curriculum. Mentoring is a more personalised activity. In addition, the mentor's role can serve as a "role model", whereas the trainer's role is generally to deliver specific content without having a "partnership" with the trainee.

How are mentor pairings made?

First, an electronic application is made and from there, the project organising team starts the pairing procedures. Mentors and mentees apply using the application form linked to the pilot project.

How will I communicate with my mentee and will we have to meet face to face?

Communication can be in person, by telephone, email, video conference meeting or other form of communication. Communications are at the mentee's responsibility.

What are the working sessions like?

Sessions will be online and will be tailored to the needs of both mentor and mentee.
