What is the UNESCO/UC3M Chair in Public Freedoms and Civic Values?
The UNESCO/UC3M Chair in Public Freedoms and Civic Values was established in 2012 through an agreement between UNESCO and University Carlos III.
The general purpose of the Chair is to foster research and training in the field of Public Freedoms and Civic Values in connection with Human Rights, Democratization and Peace. Particular attention will be paid to the Gender perspective.
An additional scope of the Chair is to foster the cooperation between the faculty of University Carlos III and other Universities in Spain and abroad, particularly with higher education institutions in North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and Africa.
We aknowledge the transformative power of education and scientific research. Both must contribute to fostering and inpiring action for a better world.

Debate on the Role of Women in Africa

With the participation of Maria Teresa Fernández de la Vega, President of Women for AFrica Foundation, and Carmen Caffarel, Chair in Communication at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and Chairholder of UNESCO Chair in Communication Research and Africa.
Joint Mission ECOWAS/Women for AFrica to Mali

Alicia Cebada has travelled to Bamako as a member of an ECOWAS/Women for Africa Joint Delegation. The main scope of this Mission was to introduce the project "Malian Women in Action for Peace". The next stages in this project include:
- Focus Groups, with the participation of around 60 Malian women coming from all over the country (February, 27th and 28th)
- One Week Intensive Training for 25 Malian Women, in Mediation Capabilities, Leadership and Projects Design (May, 5th-9th).
- Implementation of the peace projects designed by the participants to the training (May-July).

SESIÓN SOBRE EL DERECHO INTERNACIONAL HUMANITARIO DESDE UN ENFOQUE DE GÉNERO
Madrid, 20 de mayo de 2019
La Directora de la Cátedra UNESCO/UC3M impartió una ponencia sobre Género y Derecho internacional humanitario en el marco del curso internacional "A Comprehensive approach to gender in operations", en la Escuela Politécnica del Ejército. Este curso está organizado por los Ministerios de asuntos exteriores y de Defensa españoles y holandeses.
Este curso tiene como objetivo formar en perspectiva de género a personal que pueda desplegarse en misiones de mantenimiento de la paz en calidad de asesor de género. Cuenta desde 2012 con la acreditación del Colegio de Seguridad y Defensa de la UE. Está dirigido a personal de la UE, de las instituciones europeas y de sus agencias que estén destinados o puedan estarlo en misiones u operaciones de la UE, OTAN, OSCE o Naciones Unidas que sean militares de graduación intermedia, civiles, policias y diplomáticos. Este año han participado 47 personas procedentes de 21 países.

EN LA ALIANZA DE CIVILIZACIONES DE NACIONES UNIDAS
La Directora de la Cátedra coordina una Iniciativa de la Fundación Mujeres por África y la Fundación Karama, para desarrollar una Alianza de Mujeres por la Paz en el marco de la Alianza de Civilizaciones.
El 16 y 17 de mayo se trabajó con el equipo del Alto Representante de la Alianza de Civilizaciones para definir los detallese de esta iniciativa
