    The course strengthens analytical and quantitative skills, and develops a technical and rigorous language that facilitates communication on economic issues. In addition, it provides training in the economic analysis of decision making and quantitative modeling, emphasizing applications to real problems. The objective is to enhance the employability of students in sectors such as consulting, finance and national and international regulatory agencies.

  • PROGRAM

    The course assumes a basic knowledge of  Serrano, R., & Feldman, A. M. (2018). A Short Course in Intermediate Microeconomics with Calculus (2nd ed.), Cambridge University Press. The first edition (2013) may also be used. 

    1.Basics of optimization 
    2. (Chapter 2) Preferences and utility: Preference relations, utility functions, marginal rates of substitution 
    3. (Chapter 3) The budget constraint and the consumer’s optimal choice 
    4. (Chapter 4) Demand functions: Substitution and income effects, compensated demand curves, elasticity, market demand 
    5. (Chapter 5)Applications: Labor supply, substitution and income effects, taxes 
    6. (Chapters 6 and 7) Welfare economics: The one-person case and the multi-person case
