Electronic Integrated Circuits or Chips are essential to modern economies. They are embedded in virtually all technology products and are the fundamental components of the digital systems we use in everyday activities, from telephones to computers, in critical applications such as transport, health and automation, as well as for the operation of energy, transport and communications infrastructures. They are also crucial for emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) or the Internet of Things (IoT).
The Master of Science in Microelectronic Design Engineering offers specialized training that enables students to specify, design, validate, and use digital, analog, and mixed-signal integrated circuits, as well as photonic integrated circuits and interfaces for MEMS technologies, in advanced microelectronic technologies.
The training is eminently practical and focuses firstly on the knowledge of design tools and techniques, which is a major demand of companies in the sector, with which the Master's degree has connections both in Spain and abroad. It is also oriented towards the most innovative applications, such as Artificial Intelligence, security, communications, high-performance computing, etc., which would allow the subsequent realization of research activities, as well as to support the growing demand for specialists in microelectronic design in numerous sectors such as telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, health, etc.
Under verification for the academic year 2025-2026
│MASTER IN NUMBERS
- ☛ According to Statista, the semiconductor or chip industry has high growth expectations, with revenues comparable to those of the software industry, but with significantly higher growth expectations, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 10%. Demand for chips is expected to double in the period between 2022 and 2030. The expected growth is even higher than that of some emerging technologies, such as robotics.
- ☛ The semiconductor industry is strategic for the European Commission, which has launched the European Chips Act, with a budget of 43.000 million euros until 2030. In Spain, the Strategic Project for the Recovery and Economic Transformation of Microelectronics and Semiconductors (PERTE Chip) has been launched, with a budget of 12.250 million euros until 2027, which aims to strengthen the value chain of the Spanish microelectronics and semiconductor industry.
- ☛ The Master is supported by the EPIQ (Electronic and Photonic Integrated Circuits for Quantum technologies) Chair, funded by the PERTE Chip program
- ☛ According to a recent study sponsored by the Multisectoral Association of Information, Communications and Electronics Technology Companies (AMETIC), which represents the digital industry sector in Spain, an average annual demand of 600-700 people trained in the field of Microelectronics and Semiconductors is estimated in Spain alone.
- ☛ 100% of the professors are doctors or highly qualified professionals

Application
The request must be submitted electronically through our application system. Before beginning the admission process, please read the following information:
Requirements
Access to the Master in Microelectronic Design Engineering is open to those who hold a Graduate Degree or equivalent qualification in the field of Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering or Industrial Engineering, without ruling out other related disciplines, such as other engineering fields that provide a theoretical foundation that allows the subjects taught in the Master's Degree to be approached with sufficient academic guarantee. In general, the basic training required is specified in the following learning outcomes that must have been previously obtained:
- To know the basic concepts of linear systems and related functions and transforms, electrical circuit theory, electronic circuits, physical principle of semiconductors and logic families, electronic and photonic devices, materials technology and its application to solve engineering problems.
- Ability to analyze and design combinational and sequential circuits, and to use microprocessors.
In particular, those who have acquired the set of competencies specified in one of the following undergraduate degrees will have access to the Master's Degree: Bachelor's Degree in Industrial and Automatic Electronic Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Audiovisual Systems Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Communications Systems Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Telematics Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Communications Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunication Technologies Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Technologies Engineering with an intensification in electronics. In all these degrees at least the basic training specified above is obtained, as can be seen in the CIN orders that establish the requirements for the verification of official university degrees that enable the exercise of the corresponding professions (CIN/355/2009, CIN/352/2009, CIN/351/2009 and CIN/311/2009). Access will also be granted to those who hold some of the former related engineering degrees: Industrial Engineer with intensification in industrial electronics, Telecommunications Engineer, Industrial Technical Engineer in Industrial Electronics, Telecommunications Technical Engineer in Electronic Systems and Electronic Engineering degrees.
Likewise, those students who, within the framework of the admission process, accredit the basic training in the field of electronics described above, will have access to the master's degree.
Admission criteria
The selection of students will be made on the basis of:
