FAQ about languages in the university degrees

How many times can I take the Skills English exam?

You have two exam sittings per academic year: one regular sitting from September to May, in the month you choose, and one extraordinary sitting in June. Once you have passed all the courses in your degree except Skills: English, you may take this exam as many times as you need. Contact us for more information.

When and how do I request an exam date? 

You can take the exam, regardless of the moment the course appears in your study plan, by sending an email to idiomasuc3m@fund.uc3m.es. The registration deadlines are published in the exam calendar on the Language Center website.

What is the minimum score required to reach the B1 level needed to pass the subject?

A score of 30 points or higher is recognized as B1 level.

I have already taken the subject exam. How long does it take for the result to appear on my academic record? Do I need to complete any additional procedures to obtain it?

The Language Center is responsible for transferring the exam result to the Language Passport, and the Campus Administration completes the remaining procedures.

You do not need to complete any further procedures, but we recommend checking your Language Passport one or two weeks after the date of the exam.

For European Mobility, can I demonstrate my English level by having passed the Skills subject: English? What should I attach to my Erasmus application to show this?

Yes, a B1 level is recognized upon passing that subject. You do not need to submit anything else, as this information will be verified in your academic record.

When and how can I demonstrate the B2 level of English required to obtain my degree? 

This level can be recognized at any point during your studies by submitting an official certificate, taking a placement test offered by the Language Center, or completing 60 credits taught in English.

If I successfully complete a B2-level course at the Language Center or another institution, is that enough to demonstrate the B2 level required to obtain my degree? 

No, completing any course does not certify your English level.

Is the Aptis exam valid for proving your English proficiency level? 

It is perfectly valid for certifying your English proficiency, as it is included in the CRUE accreditation tables: https://proyectos.crue.org/acreditacion/ingles/

What happens if I finish my studies without proving my level of English? 

Recognition of the B2 level of English is a requirement established by the University for obtaining any undergraduate degree, so until you accredit it, you will not be able to obtain your degree.

Is there a deadline to prove my English level after finishing my studies? 

As of today, there is no deadline, but you should bear in mind that until you prove your English level, you will not be able to obtain your undergraduate degree.

What do I have to do to remain in the bilingual/English group in the second year?

In the first year of the degree, you must pass at least 36 credits taken in English. Otherwise, you must obtain level B2 either through the level test or by presenting an official B2 level certificate or higher. If, after completing the first year, you have not justified your level, in the following academic year you will have to enrol in the Spanish-language group if it exists in your degree program.

Can you issue a certificate of my English level for having completed the degree in English?

No, we cannot determine a student’s level solely based on having completed the degree in English. When you receive your degree certificate, it will include a mention that the studies were completed in English.

I have obtained 60 credits in English; do I need a certificate proving my required English level for Mobility? 

Having completed 60 credits taught in English allows you to apply for mobility places whose requirement is to demonstrate a general English level equivalent to B2, provided that the call for applications includes this possibility. 

In this case, it is not necessary to provide any documentation, as the International Relations Service verifies compliance with this requirement.

 When and how will I receive the result of the level test to submit it with the Mobility application? 

The Language Centre uploads the result to the language passport during the week following the date on which the test was taken. The International Relations Service retrieves the information on your accreditation for Mobility from there.

How old can official certificates be to be accepted for European and non-European Mobility?

Starting from the MNE 2023/24 call for applications, NO language certificates that are more than two years old will be accepted.

The recommendation we make from the Language Centre is that you contact the International Relations Service directly for information.

Which certificates are accepted to prove the language level?

All certificates that appear in the tables of CRUE-Spanish Universities are also accepted.

Although I have obtained a B2 level in the language placement test, the subject does not appear as passed in my academic record.

If more than a month has passed since you obtained the result of the placement test and the Second Language subject still does not appear as passed in your academic record, it could be because you have not enrolled in that subject or because the Campus Administration has not yet processed it. We recommend that you contact the student office of your campus so that they can review your situation.

How do I download my Language Passport?

When you open the passport, tick the box that appears to the left of the information you want to download (level test, completed course, etc.), and the option to print it as a PDF will appear there.
