UC3M awards the prizes for 2024 Secondary School Research Work

Organised by the University Social Council

5/13/24

Today, the 13th of May, the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) is awarding the Prizes for Secondary School Research Work to projects carried out by students from secondary schools in the Community of Madrid who are enrolled in their second year of A Level studies in the 2023-24 academic year and who have begun their research work this year or in their first year of A Level studies in the previous academic year.

The aim of these prizes is to recognise the research initiation effort of secondary school students, as well as the teaching staff from their schools who are leading them. These research projects enable students to build knowledge and become an active part of their own learning process.

The submitted work must have previously received a positive mark in the internal evaluation process of its institution and must constitute rigorous exercises to initiate research where added social value is apparent.

Several aspects are assessed for these prizes: originality and innovation in the research objective, the approach and development of the work; methodological rigour, correctness in the approach and reaching of conclusions; and the explicit and reasoned mention of the Sustainable Development Goals to which the research project contributes.

At the prize-giving ceremony, which takes place today in the Auditorium of UC3M’s Madrid-Puerta de Toledo Campus, a total of six prizes will be awarded in three categories, works in the area of Arts and Humanities; works in the area of Science, Health Sciences and Engineering and Architecture; and works in the area of Social and Legal Sciences.

In addition to the corresponding diplomas, the prize-winners will receive non-cash benefits or economic endowment prizes (550 euros for the first place prizes and 450 euros for the second place prizes in each of the three categories). Another of the prizes is the free payment of credits for the first enrolment in the first year of any of the degrees or double degrees offered at UC3M for the 2024-25 academic year. On the other hand, in order to promote this activity of initiating research in secondary schools, the University's Social Council will allocate an economic endowment of up to 5,000 euros to the schools where the winning students have studied their A Levels.

Participation data

This year, 94 applications were submitted from a total of 21 schools: 19 public schools, 1 private school and 1 subsidised school. Nearly 65% of the works were submitted by women. Regarding distribution by area, 56% of the applications were works related to the area of Science, Health Sciences and Engineering and Architecture, 25% to the area of Social and Legal Sciences, and 19% to the area of Arts and Humanities.
