The link and its opposite: disaffection, mediations, and political representation (VI_CO) is a Project developed under the National Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation (2022-25), National Subprogramme for the Creation of Knowledge. The project’s working hypothesis is that in the current stage of latter modernity, social bonds, or “the link” [el vinculo] must be studied in a threefold manner. Firstly, through the emotions by which said bond is generated and transmitted; secondly, through the normative structures regulating forms of agency, both individual and collective; and thirdly by attending to the bond’s performative character, which manifests itself in different representational practices. Based on these assumptions, this project aims to account for the ongoing degradation of social ties and for those new practices of community, fraternity, cooperation, and mutuality in which alternative forms of bonding are being explored. An analysis of the pragmatics of the social bond is situated in the intermediate spaces where political affections are born, and those conventions of representation which oversee them are administrated, will grant a better understanding those aspects of recognition, relationality and solidarity that make up contemporary political subjectivity in a novel way. From this crossroads we will also report on the negative phenomena and experiences which are fuelling citizen’s political disaffection as well as the general sense of discomfort produced by a persistent representative deficit in our democracies.
