Instituto de Estudios Clásicos sobre la Sociedad y la Política "Lucio Anneo Séneca"
The Institute of Classical Studies for Society and Politics “Lucio Anneo Séneca” is a university institute created in 2002 at Carlos III University of Madrid as a center to promote academic research on Classical Antiquity and its legacy throughout Medieval, modern and contemporary history. The Institute's basic research lines are the political theory and the juridical thought in the ancient Greek and Roman world, as well as their later developments. With this objective, different research projects have been coordinated by the “Séneca” Institute, ranging from the transmission and conservation of classical texts (political, juridical and literary ones), to the survival of classical mythology in contemporary society, through the elaboration of a virtual catalog of European humanists (European Electronic Humanist Project).
Given its interdisciplinary nature, the Institute integrates different areas of knowledge: Classical Studies, Roman Law and Philosophy of Law. In addition to professors and researchers of the Carlos III University, many scholars from other national institutions (Complutense University of Madrid, Autonomous University of Barcelona, among others), as well as foreigners (University of Liverpool, Università degli studi di Torino, Istanbul Şehir University, Université Lyon III Jean Moulin, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique de Paris), are members of the “Séneca”.
The Institute is very involved in the dissemination and diffusion of research and didactic activity, organizing annually numerous seminars, conferences, book presentations, workshops, with speakers from all over the world; the entire activities program benefits from the sponsorship of Banco Santander, through the financial programme of the Carlos III University. The “Séneca” Institute also publishes an annual electronic journal, "PEGÉ / FONS. Journal of studies on classical civilization and its reception" (www.uc3m.es/pege). Since its foundation, the Institute address is at the Carlos III University of Madrid, ‘Ortega y Gasset’ Building, Room 17.2.43, Calle Madrid 133, 28903 GETAFE (Madrid), email: seneca@hum.uc3m.es
