This Master’s has a clear professional orientation, offering a specialized and advanced education with a practical outlook in Spanish, European and international intellectual property law. It is the only Master’s specialized in intellectual property and copyright offered by a public spanish university. Industrial property represents only 10% of the academic program.
The new information technologies, always linked to intellectual property, have brought about a changing and globalized international environment that is closely related to intellectual property, generating relevant modifications in their legal regime and a thorough revision of traditional business models.
There is great demand for a specific professional education in intellectual property, in both counseling and transaction work and contentious or litigious situations.
It is a branch of the system that constitutes the foundation of creativity and economic, social and cultural development, affects all social spheres, is constantly evolving and demands legal certainty and security.

MASTER’S COURSE SCHEDULE

- INTERNSHIPS
The practical training of our students is an essential part of their learning program for it implies reviewing, practicing and going deeply into the academic knowledge previously adquired.
This practical training is achieved through two mandatory subjects: "Internship at law firms, companies and institutions" (6 credits), which is carried out on an individual basis, and the Subject "Reports, disputes and litigation" (3 credits), which is carried out in groups. The aim of both subjects is for the student to acquire the skills and responsibilities of someone who works in the field of intellectual and industrial property.
The individual internships are conducted in companies, lawyer’s offices and institutions of the field during the academic year in a compatible schedule with the master’s lectures and have an average duration of three months. However, if the student and the collaborating entity reach an agreement, the internship might be extended for an additional time, through a complementary internship (extracurricular internship).
The quality of the internship program is guaranteed by both the careful selection of the collaborating entities and the personalized follow-up of the internship progress and its final assessment.
IN ORDER TO DO THE EXTERNAL INTERNSHIP WITH THE COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS THE STUDENT NEEDS TO BE AVAILABLE IN THE MORNINGS ON THE SECOND SEMESTER (FROM FEBRUARY TO JUNE)

Double Qualification UC3M-Toulouse 1 Capitole
The university has several different collaboration agreements with foreign universities which make it possible to add a complement to their course or undertake a double degree in various postgraduate qualifications including intellectual property. One such agreement is with the Master 2 Proprieté Intellectuelle de la Université Toulouse 1 Capitole which enables students of the Intellectual Property Master's degree of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid to obtain a double qualification ( official master's degree in Intellectual property of the UC3M and the Master 2 Propriété Intellectuelle de UT1) which involves spending a term from September to December studying at the University of Toulouse 1 Capitole.
To obtain the double degree with the University of Toulouse Capitole you must enroll in the full program of the Master in Intellectual Property (60 ECTS).
The training takes place in Madrid from September 2023 to June or September 2024, depending on when they defend their Master's Thesis. During the academic year, the selection of students who wish to take the double degree is made. It is essential that you have sufficient knowledge of French to be able to follow the classes without any problems, even if you do not have an official certificate.
Once the UC3M master's degree in Intellectual Property is completed, a trimester is taken in Toulouse, from September to December 2024, which allows the degree to be awarded by both universities.
In case you are selected, UC3M will enroll you at the University of Toulouse Capitole. In this case you will only have to take 30 ECTS there to obtain the degree.
Visiting Professors
The course receives prestigious visiting professors every year from foreign universities such as Jane C. Ginsburg (Columbia Law School), Irene Calboli (Marquette University Law School / National University of Singapore), Laurent Manderieux (Universitá Bocconi) and Eva Inés Obergfell (Humboldt-Universität Zu Berlin).
Pan-European Seal Programme
By virtue of this Pan European Seal Programme six students were selected to work at the EU Intellectual property Office (EUIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2015 (five in Alicante and 1 in Munich). Again in 2016 six students were hired to participate in this Programme (three by the EUIPO in Alicante and three by the EPO; two in Munich and one in The Hague). In 2017 three students were selected by EUIPO to work in Alicante. In 2018 two students were selected by EUIPO, one in 2019 and again two in 2021. Furthermore, some of the students selected by the Programme have continued to work for these institutions.
