Other actions
Action: Replacement of the air conditioning/heating units
Area: Transforming the campus to develop a social integration model
Action: Replacement of the air conditioning/ heating units
Objetives: The actions in matters of sustainability are aimed at energy efficiency and replacing air conditioning/heating systems which emit gasses harmful to the ozone layer (those containing CFC, fluorine compounds).
These actions aim to contribute to the fifth objective of Campus Carlos III which is Fomenting a sustainable interurban campus as an energizing force for the surrounding community in the Madrid Region.
The following actions have taken place in the area of sustainability and energy efficiency:
- Getafe Campus:
- Renovation of the heating/air-conditioning system by replacing 6 atmospheric heaters with an operating efficiency of 85 % for condensation heaters with an operating efficiency of 98 %. (Total power 2,800 kw). In addition, the condensation heater is equipped with a variable flow system to adapt to demand in real time.
A condensation heater was chosen over an atmospheric one because the former recovers steam condensation from the exhaust. The operating efficiency of a quality atmospheric heater is between 94 and 96%, while that of a condensation heater is 108%. This represents increased efficiency of 12 to 15%.
In addition, it is not necessary to raise the temperature to heat water to 90ºC; with a temperature of 70ºC the water in the distributor can satisfy thermal demand in extreme conditions (<1ºC) and 60 to 65ºC for thermal demand in normal conditions(<5ºC).
For our installation we would have between:
P.C.I= 9.000 Kcal/m³ (n) P.C.S. = 10.500 Kcal/m³ (n)
With these values, depending on outside temperature, an average reduction of 20 to 25 % in daily consumption can be observed.
- From 1,200 to 1,500 m3 daily on days with average temperatures between 5 and 10ºC
- From 2,000 to 2,500 m3 daily on days with average temperatures between -2ºC and 3ºC.
Comparing the two months, December 2009 and December 2010, we can observe a reduction of 180,000 kwh, which means, according to the current cost of 0.04 €/kwh, 7,200 € a month. Estimating the functioning for 5 months a year, with two types of savings, around 7,000€/month in December, January and February and around 4,000€/month in November and March, we obtain an annual savings of 29,000€ in energy costs.
- Leganes Campus:
- Simultaneous installation of compressed air system
Interconnection with existing installations in Torres Quevedo and Betancourt buildings, which allows functioning with only one 75 Kw compressor, saving energy and on maintenance.
Savings:
- Consumption: 50 Kw average x 10 hours daily x 200 days x 0.1 cost Kwh = 10,000 €. Maintenance contract: 800 €/year
- Replacing spare parts (estimate): 600 €/year
- Investment amortization: 1 year and 3 months
- Replacement of air conditioning/heating units without CFC and higher energy efficiency (better COP, coefficient of performance)
- Replacement of CPD unit in Leganes 50 kw. COP old unit, 2.4; COP current, 3.1; gas from former R-22, gas without CFC R407-C
Contract awarded on August 30, 2010 to the company COBRA, INSTALACIONES Y SERVICIOS, S.A. Work began September 2, 2010 and was completed on November 22, 2010.
