- Construction of the Juan Benet II building
Action: Construction of the Juan Benet II building
Area: Scientific improvement
Action: Construction of the Juan Benet II building on the Leganes Campus.
Objetives: To construct a new building (Juan Benet II) dedicated to Biomedical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering R+D+I, two new strategic lines of the University with high potential for technological innovation and knowledge transfer.
This action aims to contribute to the fourth objective of Campus Carlos III which is Increasing the research capacity of the University as a whole, supporting the strategic lines.
The new proposed building, Juan Benet II (JBII), will be dedicated to R+D+i in Biomedical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The building will be the prolongation of the current Juan Benet (JB) building, which is dedicated to Industrial Engineering and Telecommunications Engineering. Located on the Leganes campus, it will have a total of 3,365 m2.
The JBII building will be attached to the current JB building through a partition/addition, as can be observed in Figures 1 and 2. This area, represented in Figure 3, is situated in the extreme northeast of the campus and is bordered on the northwest by Sabatini street, the walkway around the Campus, adjacent to the railway area, and for which reason there are no nearby constructions in that area. The northeast side corresponds to a narrow partition which will join it to the JB building, at the ground floor with 4 stories and an underground floor with a garage. On the south side it adjoins the interior street that will separate the JBII building and the Agustín de Bentancourt building and the underground floor with the garage. Said street will be slightly less than 5 meters wide and will separate the “industrial premises” of the Agustín de Bentancourt building from the JBII building. Finally, along the west, the area is limited by the open space of the Campus.
JBII is a building with 4 stories over a ground floor for research purposes and an underground floor for vehicle parking. Its longitudinal design has a walkway which slopes down in narrowing terraces from a maximum width of 15 m down to 5.74 m at the end. This longitudinal layout allows direct opening to the outside of the building on all sides without any patios.
There are research libraries and offices for faculty and researchers. Vertical communication will be established by a central stairway. The lift service will be shared with the existing JB building, which has two lifts attached to the partition/addition. Access on foot will be through a new staircase in the enlargement, which will offer independence to the lobby, in addition to the lifts and staircase in building. It will also have a natural and forced ventilation system.
The distribution of the new building by floors is as follows:
- Floor -1. Vehicle parking (garage) and animal laboratory with its corresponding installations and security.
- Floor 0. Different Aerospace Engineering laboratories. Also included are the access lobby, the communications nucleus, (stairway access to garage and stairway access to upper levels), a meeting room and several other rooms.
- Floor 1. Different Biomedical laboratories and several offices. Also included are the communication passageway with the Agustín de Bentancourt building and a meeting/conference room.
- Floor 2. Offices and meeting/conference rooms
- Floor 3. Offices
- Roof. Storage/installations sheds
Construction bid was awarded on April 6, 2011 to VIAS Y CONSTRUCCIONES, S.A. Construction has started on May 20, 2011 and will last 8 months.
