Presentation

Biomedical science integrates basic and applied disciplines for the study of biological processes related to health and disease, with the aim of improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of various pathologies. Understanding the molecular, cellular and systematic bases of biological processes enables the development of new biomedical therapies and technologies.

In a global context where chronic diseases, pandemics and age-related health problems challenge healthcare systems, biomedical scientists are essential to lead advances in areas such as personalised medicine, biotechnology and pharmacology.

These professionals combine expertise in biology, chemistry, genetics, immunology and bioinformatics to address complex challenges in research and clinical practice.

Biomedical science also plays an essential role in technological innovation in health, such as the development of medical devices, advanced therapies and precision diagnostic techniques. Moreover, advances in biomedical research have a direct impact on improving quality of life, while contributing to economic growth and sustainability of health systems.

The Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Sciences is distinguished by its multidisciplinary approach, which integrates fields such as molecular biology, bioinformatics and biomedical engineering. This degree, taught in English, aims to train professionals capable of integrating knowledge from different disciplines and applying it to fundamental challenges in the field of biomedicine.

Mobility

  • Mobility

    Exchange programs

The Erasmus programme permits UC3M first degree and post graduate students to spend one or several terms at one of the European universities with which UC3M has special agreements or take up an Erasmus Placement, that is a work placement or internship at an EU company. These exchanges are funded with Erasmus Grants which are provided by the EU and the Spanish Ministry of Education.

The non-european mobility program enables UC3M degree students to study one or several terms in one of the international universities with which the university has special agreements. It also has funding from the Banco Santander and the UC3M.

These places are offered in a public competition and are awarded to students with the best academic record and who have passed the language threshold  (English, French, German etc..) requested by the university of destination.

Profile and career opportunities

  • Entry profile

    Entry profile

We especially recommend the Bachelor of Science program, which provides specific training in key areas, preparing students for success in their university studies.

In addition to high school students, we accept those who have completed vocational training programs, without reference to specific cycles. In the Community of Madrid, we offer options such as the Higher Technical Training Cycles in Clinical and Biomedical Laboratory, as well as in Pathological Anatomy and Cytodiagnosis. We celebrate the diversity of educational backgrounds and strive to provide inclusive and enriching learning opportunities.

Application for a place in the degree

  • Graduate profile

    Graduate profile

The Degree in Biomedical Sciences combines the knowledge of Biology and Medicine, providing applied knowledge, although it clearly excludes direct clinical medical practice. The objective of the degree is to train professionals capable of integrating basic knowledge and being able to apply it to relevant health-related issues:

    1. Acquire advanced knowledge, demonstrating an understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects and methodology of work in their field of Biomedical Sciences with a depth that reaches the cutting edge of knowledge.
    2. Apply their knowledge in the field of Biomedical Sciences and their problem-solving skills in complex or professional and specialized work environments, for the adequate understanding of biomedical problems, giving creative and innovative answers through arguments or procedures elaborated and supported by the acquired knowledge.
    3. Possess the ability to collect and interpret data and information on which to base their conclusions, including reflection on social, scientific or ethical issues in the field of Biomedicine.
    4. To be able to deal with complex situations or situations that require the development of new solutions in the academic, work or professional field within the Biomedical Sciences.
    5. To know how to communicate to all types of audiences in a clear and precise way, knowledge, methodologies, ideas, problems and solutions in the field of Biomedicine.
    6. Identify their own training needs in their field of Biomedicine and their work or professional environment and to organize their own learning with a high degree of autonomy in all types of contexts.
