Presentation

The Bachelor’s Degree in Cultural Studies is designed for students who wish to understand culture as one of the key forces shaping the contemporary world. Collective identities, the media, creative industries, social networks, civic movements, inclusion policies, and debates on gender, diversity, memory and globalisation all show the extent to which culture now plays a central role in public life, the economy and the ways in which societies are formed and transformed.

Cultural Studies is a well-established field in the English-speaking world, and this degree is a pioneering programme in Spain. It broadens the scope of the Humanities by engaging with the major challenges of the present and with the cultural forms that offer some of the most powerful ways of understanding them: film, literature, music, the performing arts, advertising, digital media, urban practices, social discourses and new forms of communication.

The degree offers an interdisciplinary, bilingual and international education, bringing together approaches from the Humanities, Communication and the Social Sciences. Students acquire the tools needed to analyse complex cultural phenomena and to contribute to projects in cultural management, mediation, creative practice, communication and sociocultural intervention.

This degree also provides access to the University Master’s Degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education, Upper Secondary Education and Vocational Training, which qualifies graduates for teaching in secondary and upper secondary education, depending on the corresponding specialisation.

Profile and career opportunities

  • Entry Profile

The Bachelor’s Degree in Cultural Studies is particularly suited to students with an interest in the humanities, communication, the social sciences, cultural creation and contemporary debates. It is recommended that students have completed the A-Levels in Humanities or Social Sciences, or equivalent courses in other education systems, although the degree is open to a diverse range of candidates who share a desire to understand contemporary society from a cultural, critical and interdisciplinary perspective.

Particular value is placed on intellectual curiosity, reading and analytical skills, sensitivity to social and cultural phenomena, critical thinking, creativity, initiative, teamwork and an interest in applying knowledge to real-world problems. It is a suitable degree for those who wish to study culture as a living space where conflicts, identities, social transformations and forms of imagination in the present are expressed.

The University offers the degree as a bilingual programme. Consequently, students must complete at least 120 ECTS credits in English and demonstrate a sufficient level of linguistic competence, equivalent to B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Similarly, students whose mother tongue is not Spanish must demonstrate an adequate level of Spanish when taking modules in that language.
