Statistics, data, analytics. Three words that shape the present and future. Three topics in which you will become proficient in this one-year intensive master.
This master program provides thorough and intensive training in the statistical toolbox behind Data Science. Deep understanding of fundamental statistical methods is emphasized through a combination of methodological exposition, computational implementation, and application of methods. Our target is to create self-sufficient data scientists able to tackle any modeling task by applying, modifying/developing, and deploying new data analysis techniques.
Most of the data science masters focus on applications of methods, i.e. on the how to apply, rather than on the statistical techniques behind them: the how to build. The defining characteristic of this master is that it provides the same weight to both components that define the all-terrain data scientist. It does so with an intensive training program delivered by expert faculty from one of the most prestigious Spanish universities.
The master graduates will have a solid know-how that is highly demanded in the consolidated data science market. Additionally, the best-performing master students will have the opportunity to enter the PhD program in Statistics and to benefit from the excellence awards of the program.
│THE MASTER IN NUMBER
- ☛ More than 800 applications received since its start in 2018/2019 (39% international).
- ☛ 100% employment rate among graduated students, with found jobs related to the master.

- CURRICULUM
This is a one academic year master (60 ECTS) offered in English. It is comprised by 39 ECTS of compulsory subjects, 15 ECTS of electives and a Master’s Thesis of 6 ECTS.
The master offers two pathways according to the future student professional interests: either mainly methodological or mainly applied. The first one places more emphasis in advanced statistical methods for data science, while the latter is adequate for those more interested in applications, consulting, and high-performance computing.
Each pathway is associated with a series of optional subjects among nine elective subjects:
- Methodological: Simulation and Resampling, Time Series Analysis; Advanced Regression and Prediction, Biostatistics; Sampling Methods for Data Science; Functional Data Analysis.
- Applied: Data Tidying and Reporting; High Performance Computing for Data Science; Network Analysis, Graphical and Hidden Markov Models; Advanced Optimization and Decision Analytics.

Application
The request is made electronically through our application. Before starting the admission process, please, read the following information:
REQUIREMENTS
According to the regulations established by the Royal Decree 822/2021 of 28 September 2021, it is required that master students are in possession of a previous university qualification (at least Bachelor's degree or equivalent). The qualifications with preferential access are those in the following training areas:
- Statistics
- Mathematical sciences
- Physical sciences
- Informatics engineering
- Industrial engineering
- Telecommunications engineering
The possibility that graduates of other degrees may access the master's studies is not excluded, as long as they meet the aptitude requirements mentioned in the admission profile. In this case, it is required to demonstrate sufficient levels of knowledge in the areas of Mathematics (Algebra and Calculus), Statistics (Probability and Inference), and Computer Science (basic programming skills) through a specific form (see Documentation).
ADMISSION CRITERIA
The student selection will be based on:
ADMISSION CRITERIA WEIGHING Academic record of studies access 50% Professional experience 10% Qualifications obtained in essential subjects to take the master 20% Motivation letter and recommendation letters * 10% Others: awards, portfolio of works 10% * The absence of recommendation letters in the application halves the maximum grade in "Motivation letter and recommendation letters".
Documentation
In addition to the mandatory documentation, please be aware of the following instructions:
- If your Degree does not give preferential access to the program, it is mandatory that you complete and add the following form to your online application: Self-report of relevant courses for the Master in Statistics for Data Science
- Recommendation letters. Recommendation letters are received confidentially through the application system. Recommendation letters can only be sent by recommenders upon request from the candidate. In order to be included in the candidate's application, recommendation letters must be received up to 3 days after submitting the admission application. Please take this into consideration when preparing your application.
Language requirements
Check the general language requirements required to study a Master’s at UC3M, depending on whether it is in Spanish, English or bilingual.
students with foreign university degrees
Once admitted to the Master’s, students with university degrees issued by a higher education institution belonging to an educational system outside the EHEA, must provide, for enrolment, the diploma, legalized by diplomatic procedures or by means of The Hague Apostille. They must also submit the transcript of records, with the grade point average, duly legalized.
More information about Legalization of Foreign Documents.
If needed, documents must be accompanied by an official sworn translation into Spanish.

EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2024–2025
The Master in Statistics for Data Science offers a specific program of grants to boost and promote the excellence in the academic performance during the master. This translates to 6 awards, with a total amount of more than 8000€, to be awarded at the end of the academic course to those students with the most outstanding academic records.
The breakdown of the awards is as follows:
- First award (1 award in total):
- Requirements: have the most outstanding academic record and an average grade greater or equal to 9,00.
- Amount: 2500€.
- Second awards (2 awards in total):
- Requirements: have one of the three most outstanding academic records with an average grade greater or equal to 8,50 and do not receive a higher award.
- Amount: 1500€.
- Third awards (3 awards in total):
- Requirements: have one of the six most outstanding academic records with an average grade greater or equal to 8,00 and do not receive a higher award.
- Amount: 900€.
RULES
- The awards may be declared null and void if no applicant met the required average grade.
- The awards will be specified as a reduction in the tuition fees, understanding these as the net tuition fees that were not subjected to previous exemptions. The amount of the awards will never be above the net tuition fees.
- Only the students that defended the Master’s Thesis during the current academic course may receive the awards.
- The average grade will be computed with weighting of the call in which each of the subjects was exceeded, according to the specifications given in the “Resolución del Rector de fecha 1 de octubre de 2014, relativa al procedimiento de determinación de la nota media del expediente de los alumnos de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid” (“Tipo de nota media 1”).
- The computation of the average grade will be made at the end of the academic course, after the defense of the master’s theses in September takes place and the grades are officially consolidated.
- In the presence of a draw, priority will be given to the higher amount of “matrículas de honor”, “sobresalientes”, “notables” y “aprobados” in the academic record, successively. If the draw prevails, the academic commission of the master will examine the draw and take a decision.
- If there is any ambiguity in the English version of this document, the interpretation of its Spanish version will prevail.
